Deploying Exchange 2007

by Maggie Brudnicki

E-Mail Services has begun the process of deploying new e-mail servers that will run Exchange 2007. We plan to start moving mailboxes to the new servers at the end of July.

Exchange 2007 offers new features and improvements. New server architecture will make it easier for us to increase the mailbox quotas as storage and backup capacity becomes available. Furthermore, an improved OWA (Outlook Web Access) client includes drag and drop capabilities and the ability to easily access another user’s mailbox.

The new Outlook anywhere feature allows Outlook users, when off the UC network, to connect to the Exchange server without using the VPN (Virtual Private Network).

There is also improved support for mobile devices. An Active Synch client exists for just about every phone, including the new iPhone, and you will find improved calendar functionality via mobile devices.

We encourage all of our users to try a Microsoft e-mail client:  Outlook for Windows machines or Entourage for Macs. Outlook has vastly improved since the days when the Melissa virus, among others, was able to take advantage of 'holes' and infect e-mail servers. Outlook 2007 will connect to Exchange 2007 with a secure connection by default.

Microsoft has developed a series of online videos and training resources for Outlook 2007 and Outlook Web access. You will find links to these resources and more information about the deployment on the UCit E-Mail Services Web site. We will publish our schedule along with a blog of our experiences.

We plan to deploy new front end servers on 28 June. Then we will ask all of our e-mail customers to convert their IMAP and POP3 connections to be secure. We will also ask all Active Sync users to ensure that their devices are pointing to ucmail.uc.edu instead of the specific e-mail server that holds their mailboxes (e.g., ucmail6.ic.edu). We will send e-mail notification and specific instructions before we move mailboxes.

Remember, your e-mail password is the same as your Central Logon service password. When you change one, the other changes too.
